Animal Jumble:
Using white paper, ask each child to drawn a different
body part of an animal, but to keep their animal a secret. For example,
have one child draw the head, another draw the tail, another the legs and
so on. Let the children pick the animal they want to draw. When they are
done have them put the animal together with tape or glue. Have fun coming
up with a name for the animal (monk-dog-lion-potamus).
Hanging Wall Pocket: Cut one
paper plate in half. Punch holes along the straight edge, about 1 inch
apart (don't punch near the circular part yet). Have the child
"sew" up all the edges with wool, or string. Older children can
use an upholstery needle. For younger ones, a bit of nail polish put on
the end of the wool or string (let it dry first) will act like a needle.
You could also use staples. Make a hole for hanging the wall pocket on the
wall. Decorate the wall pocket with crayons, markers, or paint.
Drinking Straw
Necklace: Take a number of different coloured drinking straws and cut them up
into different sizes. Thread a needle with wool, string, or thread single strand
not knotted at the end. Make sure the wool is a little bit
longer than the length needed for the finished necklace. Tie the end of
wool around the safety pin so that the safety pin can be removed later.
The safety pin prevents the straw pieces from falling off the other end of
the wool. Thread the straw pieces onto the wool until the necklace
is the desired length. Remove the safety pin and tie the two ends of the
wool together. Cut off any extra wool.
Mini Totem Pole:
Cut the egg carton into rows of cups. Glue 2 sections together
by lining up the open part of the cups to form the totem pole. Use paint
or markers, coloured paper, feathers, beads, or anything else you can
think of to decorate your totem pole.
Mini Gift Giving Box: First, cut out 2 egg carton pieces.
Next tape the 2 egg carton
pieces together only on one part of the back. so it makes a hinge. Then
paint the box with any colour and, wait till the paint dries. Next put
stickers or glitter on to decorate. Then, stuff tissues inside the little
round gift giving box. Finally, put your small gift item or piece of
jewellery into the box. and your done.
Box Guitar:
This is an easy way to make a guitar using an old shoe box or tissue box,
rubber bands, scissors, a paper-towel tube, and a pencil. Find an old shoe
box, tissue box, or other cardboard box. Have an adult cut an oval-shaped
hole in the top. Stretch a few rubber bands around the box and over the
hole. Put a pencil under the rubber bands on one side Tape on a
paper-towel tube and decorate the box.
Creative Picture Frames:
8 ice lolly sticks, 2 for each side, then
glue them to the
paper in a square shape to create the frame. Next, the child draws a
picture of their choice in the frame. They may also colour the ice lolly
sticks to colour the frame. When they have drawn their picture they will
cut the excess away from around their picture frame and they have a
complete picture in a frame.
Pencil Holder:
Paint ice lolly sticks.
let dry. Trace the end of the
toilet paper holder on to cardboard. Cut this circle out. Glue it on to
one end of the cardboard tube. let dry. Cover tube with a light coat of
tacky glue. Place painted sticks side-by-side to cover tube. Wrap with
rubber bands until dry. Decorate with painted shapes if
desired.
