Manfred Mann's distinctive sound relied on Paul Jones' vibrant R & B
vocals and prominent harmonic playing. By 1964 the group consisted
of Jones, Manfred Mann, Mike Vickers, Tom McGuiness and Mike Hugg.
They were invited to write the new theme for the TV pop show Ready
Steady Go. The result was 5-4-3-2-1 which gave them their first
chart hit. This paved the way for a string of hits by Paul Jones, 13
top ten hits and 3 number ones. Other hits included Mighty
Quinn, Do Wah Diddy. Ha Ha said the Clown and Fox on the Run.

The Animals
The Animals: Fronted by Eric Burdon were no strangers to Sunderland.
The Animals formed in 1964 in Newcastle, out of the remains of the
Kansas City Five, a local pop group. The Animals played a brand of
rock similar to the Rolling Stones. House of the Rising Sun was
released in 1960 and went to, no 1. During 1966 members came and
went, and after the departure of Alan Price the band were soon laid to
rest. Other hits: Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood & We've Gotta Get Out
of this Place.

The Small Faces
In 1968 the Top Rank Sunderland, saw The Small
Faces, A very popular band, well-known for their biggest hit All
Or Nothing. Fronted by Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane. Their
career suffered with disagreement's between the band, their
management and record company. A ban by the BBC. top of the
pops in 1967 was also bad news for the Faces who soon recovered.
Chart hits: Sha la la la lee, My Mind's Eye, Itchycoo Park and
Lazy Sunday.
