Beamish Ghosts

Beamish Hall is said to have the ghost of the Grey Lady. She is said to appear near Beamish Burn, after she suffocated in a trunk she was hiding in to avoid an arranged marriage. The Sun Inn at Beamish, is said to be haunted by Wandering Willie. It is said he hanged himself after a broken love affair, and when the pub was dismantled and taken from Bishop Auckland and rebuilt at Beamish museum Willie moved with the pub.

 

Jimmy's Pipes

At the foot of the steps down from Elvet Bridge to Brown's Boathouse lies the entrance to what was for years the old County Gaol. Jimmy Alien, once piper to the Duchess of Northumberland and a notorious horse stealer, was confined in this dungeon prison in 1803 awaiting transportation. He was a very old man and so the sentence was never carried out. Seven years later the Prince Regent, wrote Jimmy a pardon but it arrived on the day of his death. There is an old story that his pipes can still be heard in the cells.

 

The Toff

A terraced house in Zetland Street, Monkwearmouth 1969, on a hot summers night. As a couple lay in bed boiling hot it was a complete surprise to them when the room suddenly turned icy cold, and then they were horrified when the ghost of a Victorian toff appeared through a wall, walked through their bed, and then disappeared into the opposite wall.

 

Ghosts at Levens Hall

There are several ghosts at Levens Hall in Cumbria but the most famous one is the Grey Lady, who is thought to have been a gypsy woman who has cast a curse on the family of the house. The Grey Lady has appeared in front of several motorists who were making their way to the Hall, and they had to brake suddenly or swerve to avoid hitting her, only to find when they got out of their cars to help found that the Grey Lady had vanished.

 

The Nightmare Nana

In 1972, Springwell Road, Sunderland. The nana of the family had been dead for only three months, when one of the boys started to see her at the top of the stairs every night when he was going to bed. He said first he could see her and then the rest of the family were there and she only disappeared after his little sister appeared. He became so scared that after that he used to make someone go upstairs with him when he went to bed.
