Denise Robertson
Sunderland-born novelist and TV agony aunt Denise Robertson the agony
aunt off 'This Morning' lives in Tunstall. As well as being the
likeable agony aunt for Richard and Judy on This Morning Denise is
also a successful author.
James Bolam
was born in Sunderland on 16th June 1938. As an actor his most famous role was
Terry alongside Rodney Bewes in the hit series The Likely Lads between
1964 and 1966, with a follow up Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads?
in 1973. He has appeared in many other hit television series including
When the Boat Comes In, The Beiderbecke Tapes and Second Thoughts.
Bryan Ferry was in Washington, Sunderland on 26th September 1945.
He went on to become lead singer of one of Britain's most popular groups of the
1970's and 1980's Roxy Music. He also had a successful solo career during this
time.
Gibb McLaughlin
was born George Gibb McLaughlin in Hendon on 19th July 1884.
Between 1920 and 1957 he became one of Sunderland's most fruitful
actors, appearing in some of the best British films of the time
including The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1934, Oliver Twist in 1948, and
Hobson's Choice in 1954. He died in Los Angeles, California in 1960.
Jack Casey
known as 'Cast Iron Casey' he was probably Sunderland's most famous
boxer, from 1926 when he started boxing until 16 years later he had
over 200 fights. On 12th December 1932 he fought for the British
middleweight at Newcastle but lost on points.
Ernie Lotinga
Born 1876 in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear started out with the
stage name of Dan Roe a comic vocalist in 1898. He later appeared on
the West End and in films. He died 28 October 1951 in London, England.
Billy Hardy
born in Sunderland on 5th September 1964. He is a famous boxer. He is a former
Commonwealth and EBU middleweight boxing champion, and famous son of
Sunderland. His professional record was 37-9-2 with 17 knockouts. The
Billy Hardy Sports Centre, in Castletown, bears his name.
Maurice Roeves was born in Sunderland on 19th March 1937, he attended Bede
school. He has been in many films and had many TV roles, he played Colonel Edmund Munro in Last of
the Mohicans, and the Warden Miller in Judge Dredd, in Grafters the t v series
he played Lennie and the list goes on.
