Sunderland Marina is situated on the North bank of the River Wear.
The £1m lottery funded Marine Activities Centre was opened in 1994 by round the world
yachtsman Chay Blyth. The Marina has built up an enviable reputation for its
superb facilities and its provision of high quality training.
The Marina provides an excellent base for North East cruising together with
excellent facilities ashore. Housed within the four storey Marine Activities
Centre are a number of organisations including an Italian restaurant a café and
a boating club with bar.
The four storey building houses a range of organisations and facilities
including Northumbria Police, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the Sea
Scouts and an italian restaurant complete with panoramic views. The Marina
complex which includes moorings and new housing, with Roker beach on the right,
was built on the former North Docks, while the Water sports Centre is centrally
located on the Marina itself.
The Marine Activities Centre offers dinghy sailing, canoeing,
kayaking, surf sports, climbing and power boating. It also welcomes
visiting boats and the opportunity to follow the Riverside Sculpture Trail.
