Pensions - anyone set up for when they retire?

Post by Steve30000 »

I've had a workplace one for 10 years now, but I reckon I'll probably drop down while I'm working imo.

Don't think I'll have enough to retire on anyway.

I bet there's some on here who'll be set for life when they retire

@Steve30000, I have paid my 35 years to qualify for the full state pension.
I also have a company pension which probably has about £120,000.
I also paid in voluntary contributions when I could, so I will have a pot of around £150,000 when I finally retire which will be soon.
That might sound like a lot, but it's not enough in reality, I plan on putting around £30,000 in over the next two years-ish.
My advice for those with very little is to leave it and spend the money.
I'd even go on to say don't pay the full 35 years like I have because if you don't pay enough, you get benefits to top it up and then you qualify for other benefits like heating allowance and everything else.
However, if you plan on building up a decent pot, go for it and pile as much in as possible because it is tax-efficient.
Everyone's circumstances are different, so plan it properly.

I have never put anything to one side but did pay all I need to get the full state pension but I don't need much to get by, just a few luxuries now and again.

I paid in enough and have a decent pension pot.
I also have many decisions to make.

Not wanting to tempt fate, but I hope the Labour Party don't undo things and come for the pensions as we are told might happen.

There were a few empty slots in the 1980s but I just passed the 35-year mark. After what you said, maybe it will go against me now. But I'm not complaining.

It's a difficult thing with incomplete years, I have 35 but there's one I could top up for less than £30.
But I have the full 35 years so I'm not sure if there's any benefit to top that one up, I doubt if there is a good reason.
What happens to all the money where we have incomplete years?
For example, for someone who has the majority in incomplete years, where's the money gone?

I reckon I've got another 14 years, but I hope I've got enough in my work pension to top it up otherwise I'm buggered 😐

Personally speaking, I hope that I can enjoy mine because I have worked hard.

My main thing is trying to live long enough to enjoy life from the hard work I've done previously!
